For Mystery Meet #5, we headed to Dorchester. Our clues were intentionally deceiving – they revealed the neighborhood, but suggested two different restaurants. One clue referred to investors helping open the restaurant in 2005, while another stated that the restaurant opened in 2008.
The location was finally revealed as Chris Douglass’ funky neighborhood pasta and pizza joint by the Ashmont T station, Tavolo. Chris Douglass is widely respected for his former South End restaurant Icarus, and Boston Globe food critic Devra First declared “I have seen the future of restaurants, and it is Tavolo” upon its opening in 2008.
Chris Douglass was on hand to host the evening for our lucky diners. Charcuterie was served first, followed by a squid ink raviolo.
After the second course, diners discovered that the rest of their meal would be served three blocks away, at Douglass’ other restaurant, the Ashmont Grill. (After Devra First named it one of they city’s ten influential restaurants, how could we possibly skip it?) Douglass opened the Ashmont Grill in 2005 with the help of dozens of neighborhood investors, and we wanted to see what it was all about. So we headed into the rain to our final destination, where we enjoyed a grilled pork tenderloin with apple butter. The evening was capped off with sticky toffee pudding.
Glenn, Katrin and Eleni of the Wine Dine With Us blog joined us. You can read their review here. Leslie of IntellaPrice was also on hand, and you can read about her experience here.
Special thanks to Glenn for playing host and to Leslie for providing the photos.
