San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area and, for eating, the most quietly rewarding. Its food follows its population, which is among the most diverse in the country.
The Vietnamese community here is one of the largest outside Vietnam, and the pho, bánh mì and com tam along Story Road and in the Little Saigon district are excellent and inexpensive. Mexican food is equally established, particularly on the east side.
Japantown is one of only three left in the United States and has been continuously occupied since the early 1900s. San Pedro Square Market downtown is the tourist-facing option and a reasonable first stop, but the better eating is in the neighbourhoods.
