Fremont has the largest Afghan population in the United States, concentrated in the district known as Little Kabul along Fremont Boulevard. The kebab houses, bolani and mantu are the reason to eat here, and there is nothing comparable elsewhere in the country.
The city also has a very large South Asian population, and the Indian restaurants and grocers — particularly along Mowry and Fremont — cover regional cooking rather than a generic template. Chinese and Taiwanese food is equally well represented.
Fremont sits at the southern end of the East Bay, close enough to Oakland and San Jose to treat all three as one eating area. The strip malls are where the good food is; the downtown is thin by comparison.
