Winnipeg’s food traditions came with Ukrainian, Polish, Mennonite and Icelandic settlement across the prairies. Perogies, holubtsi, kubasa and borscht are everyday food here rather than novelties, and the church halls and delis still make them.
Winnipeg-style rye is a genuine local product: a sourdough rye with a distinctive crust, made the same way for the best part of a century. Fat Boy burgers, dressed with a chili sauce, are the other local item.
The Forks, at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, has been a trading and meeting place for thousands of years and now holds the city’s main market hall. Winnipeg also has one of the larger Filipino populations in Canada, and the food is correspondingly good.
